Tomcat was developed by Sun Microsystems software architect James Duncan Davidson. It’s first public release was version 2.0 in 1998. Since many open source projects had O’Reilly books featuring animals on their covers, Davidson wanted to name his project after an animal. Davidson chose “Tomcat” as its name because it could fend for itself. This was the case even though there was already an O’Reilly book featuring a Tomcat on its cover. In 2003, Davidson got his wish when the Tomcat O’Reilly book was published featuring a snow leopard on its cover. Apache Ant, a build automation tool, was developed as a side project of Tomcat by Davidson. Tomcat was later released as an open source project and donated to the Apache Software Foundation.
Davidson has gone on to author a number of web development books including Learning Cocoa with Objective-C, Cocoa in a Nutshell, Running Mac OS X Panther, and Mac OS X Panther Hacks. He also began to write a number of powerful Ruby on Rails applications.
